Sunshine Coast City Council – Maroochydore Dredging

Maroochydore

Natural events such as seasonal storms, cyclones and ocean swells can cause dramatic changes to Australia’s coastline.  In areas that rely on the coast for their economy, dramatic changes mean catastrophic damage.  Maroochydore suffered severe coastal erosion during the summer of 2012, stripping its award winning beach of almost all of its sand.

Birdon was selected by the Sunshine Coast City Council to carry out replenishment works in time for the next holiday season.  In all, 125,000m3 of clean, marine sand was dredged from the mouth of the Maroochy River to renourish the beach some 2kms away through a 400mm pipeline and spread along 1.2km of beachfront.  Birdon’s dredging team utilised our Cutter Suction Dredge “Darwin” for the operation.
